Owner and Family
Hi My name is Bronwen Mackenthun and I have been teaching children for over 15 years. I am married to Bruce Mackenthun. I have 3 beautiful girls: Izabela, Shiloh and Josephine, and God blessed us with a wonderful surprise in 2013, with our son Corban. He is a very joyful little boy and thoroughly enjoys all the attention his big sisters give him.
We have lived in Shakopee since July 2003.
I have a Bachelors of Arts degree, majoring in Political Studies and International Relations. I also did further credits in Psychology after graduating from the University of Witswatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
I was born in South Africa and came to the U.S.A as an au pair in Dec 1999. During my visit I met my husband, Bruce and further travels were put on hold....we were married on the 14 July 2001.
I started teaching as an assistant preschool teacher at Living Christ Childcare in Chanhassen (August 2001). After six months of practical training I was promoted to teacher.
Teachers are expected to get thirty hours per year of teacher education and as a daycare provider the requirement is 16 hours per year.
I also completed the recommended "Essential Elements of Family Childcare" course before I started my daycare. The training was 8 weeks of comprehensive training covering everything from 'Record Keeping for a business in a home' ,'Nutrition, sanitation and health' to 'Curriculum' and Discipline'.
My husband Bruce is self-employed too (Licensed general contractor and is a windows and doors specialist) and is my back up if need be. I have rarely needed to have him stand in for me though. It is pleasant to have him around, and he is a great source of help with projects I need made e.g the bean bag toss game he made for me. He also provides 'science' lessons every now and then, especially during hunting season, since he is a hunter. His other 'services' for the daycare are the snow plow service and lawn and garden service too. During the winter he is around a little more and might entertain the children after nap by playing pool or kick ball with them.
The final chapter of our family are our pets: Flash (Charcoal labrador) and Queen Esther(totally declawed cat); both of them love being around people and are very good with children.
I currently homeschool my 3 girls and am slowly starting Kindergarten with my son( turned 5yrs on 2 August), since he is a late summer birthday.
I started this journey of childcare because I wanted to be home with my children, but I needed an income. It has been the best of both worlds: watching my children growing up, teaching them and their friends and still being able to pay my bills! :)
I hope that your child/children can join us at Bronwen's Sonshine Childcare. :-)
